8月10日 New SpaceOkay, so screw MSN Spaces. I'm tired of them messing up my site and changing their format on the fly. This will be my last blog in this clusterfark of a site.
I've moved temporarily to blogspot.com, so come check me out at http://rxsheepxrtemp.blogspot.com and if you've got me linked on your websites make sure to change the link to that one. Blogspot's not as customizable, and it's not as user friendly, but they don't change your site on you every other week just because Messenger gets an update. Screw that business and screw MSN, viva la blogspot.

7月31日 UpdatepaloozaHey all.
It's been a while.
Not much has happened since I got back from my trip to Newfoundland, ti's been business as usual, except for one thing.
I found out a couple days ago that my Grandfather on my Mom's side, Reg Beck, had a mild heart attack. From what I gather from my Mom he's doing okay right now, and she hasn't called with any updates in a couple of days, so hopefully things are fine. I haven't talked about it with anyone, to be honest, other than my parents, so I feel a bit of a weight off my shoulders here in saying that I'm worried about him and I really hope nothing bad happens any further and that he remains as healthy as possible for years to come.
This Thursday I'm meeting up with someone I met on the Spawn message boards. Ages ago he contacted me about my music, he seemed to like it, and we got to chatting. He's from Belgium and he and his family are currently on vacation in the States and Canada, and we decided to hook up to do something Thursday when I get off work. I'll likely be bringing him to the Silver Snail and places like that. He speaks english, so it should be fine. He comments on my blogs sometimes under the name 'Aircommander' or something like that. I'm looking forward to it, should be fun.
I found a site last night that was full of animated gifs, a lot of ones from movies and tv and stuff. If you like those things and want to see some new ones, click HERE to see tons. Some of them are for 18+ only and the site is probably NSFW, so proceed at your own risk.
I found a site last night called Second Life. It's a program that when you play, it's like a giant interactive chatroom where you make, customize, and control yourself in the 'world.' If you want to pay real money you can have your own piece of land and build anything you want on it. Arcade, store (where people pay YOU money for things you create for the game), sex shop, cafe, bar, restaurant, bookstore, art gallery, auto shop, movie theater, radio station... anything. The game is limitless. My only beef with it so far is that it's slow, even if you've got a top notch computer. I got HeavyP into it and even though we get frustrated at the random slowness, it's still a laugh to interact with people in there. Anyhow, check it out HERE if you're curious at all about it...
Work's work, nothing new here. Big shock.
Aight, that's about it for now...
Make sure to comment, and I'll see you guys later on,
Thanks for reading,
-chrisp-rxsheepxr- 7月20日 NewfoundlandHey everyone!
I've been on vacation since last Friday and I currently find myself in Newfoundland... in St. John's, at my parents house. I' m using a new iMac, and I tell ya, it's so different to use.... so weird....
Anyhow, got back from a whirlwind trip around the bay today. We went to Gander Bay on Monday, I slept on a couch there... then over to Grand Falls yesterday... I slept on a couch there... and then back into St John's today.
Me, Perry and Justin went out tonight for a laugh. We hit up some late night mini golf and just pretty much drove around and talked. It's the kind of thing where you've got no specific destination, just 3 friends, some laughs, and a couple of cameras.
So far my vacation has been hectic and whatnow, and I'm only here until Saturday... but so far so good. Things should wind down a little bit now since I've seen all the relatives I needed to. I've still got a lot to do, and I won't have any real spare time, but it's not going to be as hectic at least.
Best part is that everyone's talking about how hot it is here and it's, like, the perfect temperature for me here, after going through the hotness that is Toronto right now.
Anyhow, my Nintendo DS Lite has been a good timekiller when on the road, so it's worked out good, I'm very glad I bought it. And I've been reading Napalm and Silly Putty by George Carlin when the batteries for the DS Lite run low. Other than that I've been trying to catch a few winks of sleep here and there. Tonight will be the first night in 3 days I slept in a bed, so it should be a good one.
K, so I'm making a new photo album over there for you, it's called Nfld Summer 2006, and I'll be adding pics to it as I go, so take a look at them, comment if you'd like... I'm sure I'll be adding more and blogging again before I go back to Toronto on Saturday.
So hi to all the folks back in Toronto, hope things are going good, and enjoy the pics.
-chrisp-rxsheepxr- 7月10日 Review: Superman ReturnsSuperman Returns
This review will contain at least ONE spoiler. I am going to write it in black so you have to swipe it to read it. Some browsers, however, don’t work correctly, so I’m going to do a little test here…there is a sentence in black right after this line… If you can read this sentence without swiping it first then the spoiler will be readable, so proceed at your own risk.
I do not like Brandon Routh. Let’s just get that out in the open right away. There’s something about the guy that’s just ‘off’ to me. When I first saw the promotional picture of him in the Superman suit, I threw up in my mouth a little. Sure he looks like a young Chris Reeve… sure he fills the suit out fine, sure he could pass as Superman. But I still never liked him.
I am here to say, unequivably, that having finally seen the movie, having seen him in action… I still don’t like him.
But the big question isn’t how much I like the guy they’ve got playing Superman, but did I actually enjoy the movie? The answer is ‘Heck yes.’
I’ve never been a big Superman fan to begin with. Never really bought into the comics except when they did the whole ‘Superman’s Dead’ stuff, but even then EVERYONE was buying it. It was more of a bandwagon thing, a chance at owning a bit of comic book history… along with millions of other people. But other than that I never really saw the big deal. Here was this guy that had so much power, so many different talents, it’s like you almost didn’t WANT to like him because the best superheros are the ones you can identify with, and a ‘perfect’ being like Superman isn’t easy to identify with. This is where two key elements come in to play: Clark Kent and Kryptonite. Clark Kent is the bumbling human side of Superman. The compete opposite. I won’t go into any mor detail because if you’re reading this review chances are you already know much about Superman. And of course Kryptonite is his one true weakness.
And that’s about all Superman has. It’s all he’s ever had, for better or worse.
So they make this movie and call it a seqeul to Superman 2. They forget that Superman 3 and 4 existed (I guess because they were so terrible) and proceed to continue the series from #2. That’s fine by me. I like Bryan Singer. I think he did a fabulous job with the X-Men films, and he’s got a great future. And this movie solidifies him as a true Hollywood player, because he ‘gets’ Superman. Everything they need for a classic Superman tale is there; but my only problem with it is that it just feels a little off somehow. Something’s… strange about it. I don’t know what it is. Maybe it’s me.
Anyhow, as always, in the interest of keeping this short I’ll just put a list of good and bad things in the movie.
The good:
-Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor. He’s just great in this, with just the right of comedy infused into the role. My favorite scene with him involves him brushing his teeth.
-The special effects. They were very well done and you can really see the production value onscreen. Which is probably a good thing since the movie cost something to the tune of 240 million dollars to make. Eeep!
-Kate Bosworth surprisingly. I thought she would be a terrible Lois Lane. Of course, I’m biased because I think Erica Durance (Lois on Smallville) is the hottest thing alive, so I immediately called foul on Bosworth, but she pulled it off and played Lois Lane correctly. For that I am really happy.
-I really liked how they incorporated certain imagery into the movie, such as the visual representation/recreation of the cover or Action Comics #1. that was neat to see.
The Bad (sure there were other good things, but I’m trying to be brief):
-The length. The movie feels a little too long. Some added editing would have made it feela little less overbearing. Some people like that in their movies, but I just felt weighed down by the end of it.
-The melodrama. They took themselves seriously when they made this movie. Sure there is comedy and campiness aspects, but certain things just felt forced. Emotion is nice and all, but certain plot points as well as just the overall tone of the film as rather broody in parts.
-SPOILER WARNING (swipe to read if you want a plot twist spiled) Superman/Lois’s child. I REALLY don’t like that they did that. Sure, they had me fooled… the first time I saw a trailer for the movie and saw that Lois had a kid, I was like, wow.. they sure screwed that up. And then to find out it’s really Superman’s child? It’s just not cool, as far as I’m concerned. I realize they’re trying to do something different, but addind a plot twist just for the sake of having a twist isn’t something I think they should have done. And now, for subsequent sequels, they’re stuck with that decision. I really didn’t like that.
Anyhow, overall it’s a good film. In fact it’s REALLY good. For someone who’s not a fan of Superman to begin with, like me, this movie probably won’t change your mind about him completely… but looking at it from an unbiased standpoint, I can easily say they did a great job overall on this movie. Visually it’s stunning to look at, and you WILL believe the special effects. Certain laws of physics are shattered (the airplane scene is completely impossible) but we’re talking about a comic book movie here, so you can’t judge that stuff.
Unfortunately for the filmmakers, the budget was so high, and the hype was so large, that it hardly met expectations at the box office. It’s on par to make it’s budget back, and there’s always merchandising and overseas box office, but I think that Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (review coming soon) really took away Superman’s thunder by breaking box office records this past weekend. And it’s well deserved because at the end of the day I’m giving POTC:DMC 9.5/10, just so you know.
But overall, putting aside my hatred for Brandon Routh, I’d easily give Superman Returns 8/10. I remember doing a small review of it the day after I saw it and I may have given it a different score then… but now, a while after seeing it and allowing it to digest, I think 8/10 is very fair for this movie. It’s not nearly as good a recreation of a classic character as Batman Begins was, but they did a good enough job to reinvigorate the franchise.
I recommend it, as it would be nice to see them make their budget back. I'd like to see them make more of them because even though I don't agree with the direction the franchise is heading, it could still be interesting in the end. -chrisp-rxsheepxr- Everyone's Got SomethingIt just clicked.
Something just clicked in my head and I don't know why I never saw it before... but it's kinda weird.
I just realized that everyone's got something. Everyone's got somethig wrong about them... some malady, some sickness. Everyone's got something. I've got my stomach thing, for starters. I've been having digestive problems since I was about 16 or so. It hasn't gotten better, and it's something I'll likely have the rest of my life. And then it came to me, everyone I know has something wrong with them.
Julia gets nosebleeds more than she should, Travis has his arthritis, as does my Mom. My father's got stomach problems similar to mine. Perry's got the touch of angina, as does my Grandmother. All my grandparents have something specific, for that matter. Mike had drug issues as well as other things, Jordan had problems with his knees all his life. Sue had respiratory problems. Chantelle (girl on my team at work) has problem TMJ and has to have her jaw broken and re-set... it's just... it's just weird how it seems like everyone's got something.
Perhaps I'm thinking about it too much. I could list off a bunch more people, of course, there's just so much out there.
Anyhow, I realize I'm behind in my reviews and I've got at least 3 to write (Superman Returns, The Hills Have Eyes and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest) so I'll try to get to those and have them done by the end of this week. This Saturday I'll be going to Newfoundland for another trip, for a week, so I don't know how much updating I'll be able to do on my site.
Catch you later everyone.
-chrisp-rxsheepxr- 7月5日 27So I turned 27 today. Feels like any other day, really; as birthdays usually do once you hit 19 or so. Justin and Tarah wished me a Happy one on my last blog, and I thank you, guys. And a big sheepish thank you to everyone else who's sent me well wishes as well.
I've got nothing planned for today, to be honest. Birthdays aren't a huge deal so much; and I'd rather just wait until the weekend or something anyhow. I'm looking forward to seeing Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest on Saturday, as well as checking out the Nathan Phillips Square Outdoor Art Festival.
I'll probably be buying a Nintendo DS Lite with some of my birthday haulage. Hoorah for video games! I've got a gift certificate for Future Shop and GST Cheques supposedly got mailed out yesterday, so that alone should buy me the DS. It would be great to have it for my flight back to Nfld in a week and a half; would be even greater if I had the New Super Mario game to go along with it. :P I'll never grow up. Promise. Though I look at it this way: I could spend the gift certificate on some DVD's that I'll watch 5, maybe 6 times in my lifetime, or I could get a DS Lite that would help pass time on the bus, subway, travel, for hours and hours. But whatever, I will justify nothing!
Anyhow, this blog was written here and there throughout the morning, I guess I should post it before something arses up and I lose it all.
Have a good one everyone.
-chrisp-rxsheepxr-
7月3日 Still up.So it's almost 5am and I'm still awake. So much for finding a natural sleep pattern. Watched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind sometime this morning. Forgot how good it was. It's proof that Jim Carrey can do serious stuff really well when given the right material. Spent yesterday not on the computer. It's amazing how many junk emails pile up in one day. 26 to be precise. Jeez. Anyhow, off to pretend like I know how to fall asleep. Take it easy everyone, I'm sure you're all sleeping now, doing the one thing I wish I could do better. -Chris. 7月2日 The Supermans Have Eyes.Hey... quick update... I got some clothes at Old Navy today, much
needed pants, shorts and some shirts with a gift certificate a got a
little early from my parents for my upcoming birthday. Julia also
picked me up 'The Hills Have Eyes' (which I just finished watching....
eeeeeep!) Long story short, we saw Superman Returns today as well. I'll be doing a bigger review when I'm more awake, but let's just say that if, IF the actor they got for Superman, Brandon Routh, didn't look like a complete ass to me, I'd probably give the movie an 8.5/10 or perhaps even a 9. But the fact that the guy just irks the hell out of me, coupled with the fact that the movie felt about 20 minutes too long, I'm going to have to give it a 7/10. I recommend it, sure, but I won't be buying the DVD. And as far as The Hills Have Eyes (2006)... Damn. Mutants = creepy. The guy that wrote and directed High Tension (one of the best horror films that came out of nowhere) did an AWESOME job with the gore and the atmosphere, and of course, the tension. If you like horror movies at all, you should love this one, certainly one of the best horror movies I've seen in a looooong time. I'd actually have put this one amongst my favorite horrors, for sure. 9/10... I took away a point because it wasn't AS creepy as I was expecting it, but the gory stuff almost made up for it.... :P Come back later for my proper reviews of both these films. -chrisp-rxsheepxr- 6月30日 The Long One. The Weekend, That is....Lotsa interest in that last blog, I tell ya.... *rolls eyes.
Sheeeeeeesh...and I thought y'all liked movies....
I'm seeing Superman Returns tomorrow. Julia's more interested in me, I'm watching for Kevin Spacey and the special effects. Brandon Routh can eat my poo.
Have a good evening, check back for my review of the movie sometime over the long weekend.
And next weekend is the annual Toronto Nathan Phillips Square Art Fair. I never got to go last year because I was in Newfoundland, so I'll be going for sure on Saturday. I'll also likely be seeing Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest as well. The first movie just blew me away because I went into it expecting to hate it; so I'm hoping the sequel lives up to it's name. I'll be reviewing that one as well, of course.
And in case you're one of the 5 people that didn't see either of these yet, check out these links:
Anyhow, enjoy... participate in my last blog if you want, and I'll catch y'all later
-chrisp-rxsheepxr- 6月29日 Top Three's, Movie EditionI haven’t done a blog with much real substance in a while, so I thought I’d do something a little different. The only way it’s going to work well is if I get you guys to participate, though. My thought was to share some movies, and what I mean is that I’m going to list out a bunch of different movie genres and then you pick your top three movies for each genre. You don’t have to pick them in order, like #1 favorite, #2, #3… you can make it random like I’m doing. If you are able to comment on this site, post your picks in the comments section, and if you don’t have an MSN Passport and are unable to comment here, just send my an email with your picks to chrispeckford@gmail.com. My plan is to make a big huge list of everyone’s favorite movies and then post them on here at a later date, that way people can read it and find movies they’d never seen before. It’s also a good way to see who shares the same tastes as each other.
Anyhow, I’d really like this to be a successful thing, so please, if you like movies at all, take the time to either comment or send me an email so I can generate a big list. I’ll start by listing off the genres I’m using, and then I’ll put my picks in here to start things off. I’m going to keep the list down to nine genres and a miscellaneous one, because there are a LOT of sub-genres and that would just be too much for some people… so here we go, give me three movies you love for each category, and remember, just put them in random order. And I’ve decided that you can use a whole Trilogy or series as one pick, since a lot of movies are going that route lately. So you don’t have to pick one specific Star Wars movie if you don’t want to… you can just say “Star Wars Saga.” Then again, if you really do have one single favorite, like I do, you can just list the one. Anyhow, have fun with it:
Genres: War Fantasy Sci-Fi Action Drama Comedy Horror Animation Family Miscellaneous (post 3 movies you couldn't fit in anywhere else)
And my current picks for these categories:
War: Saving Private Ryan Three Kings Full Metal Jacket
Fantasy: Lord of the Rings Trilogy Hellboy The Princess Bride (shut up)
Sci-Fi: The Matrix Trilogy Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith The Fifth Element
Action: So hard to pick just three... True Lies T2 Demolition Man (the movie rocked, shut up)
Drama: Magnolia Oldboy Unbreakable
Comedy: 40 Year Old Virgin Best in Show Rushmore (more of a dark comedy, but whatever)
Horror: The Shining The Devil’s Rejects The Saw Saga, thus far…
Animation: Monsters Inc. The Iron Giant Spirited Away
Family: Harry Potter Saga Pirates of the Caribbean The Rocketeer
Miscellaneous: Fight Club (I forgot all about this, how the hell... it's my favorite movie and all...) se7en (I forgot about this too... the hell is wrong with me?) American Beauty (I had this on my drama list, but I like the other 3 a smidge more)
So there you go, it’s hard to pick just three in each category, and there are still TONS of movies I’d love to recommend, but that’s my list for now, off the top of my head.
So either comment in here or email me your results and we could have some fun with this.
Thanks for reading, and thanks even more for participating, if you do…
-chrisp-rsheepxr- 6月27日 Just click it.Spider Man 3 Trailer.... for those who are interested:
I'm excited as hell about it, looks better than I hoped it would.
Bigger blog later.
Enjoy.
-chrisp-rxsheepxr- 6月26日 10'000Well I passed 10'000 hits over the weekend. So much for fanfare and big bashes. It's a milestone, no doubt, but it's not a big deal. The next milestone for me will be 15'000 I guess.
Anyhow, I've had something stuck in my eye for 2 days now and my eye is bloodshot, itches and tears up non-stop. It's driving me nuts. I'm figuring it's an allergy or something, but it just plain sucks. I've also got a cold, which makes things even more dandy. I NEVER get colds, so it's just some great timing there.
I'm going to be quite the mess for a few days more.
And I don't know if it's because I have a cold, but this coffee tastes like ass. But I can't stop drinking it.
Have a good one, guys, hopefully you'll have a better one than I'm having anyhow.
-chrisp-rxsheepxr- 6月23日 New Art Hey everyone, I've added a new Album on my
site called New Art for some Photoshop and other
things I've done recently. It'll keep getting bigger
and bigger as days go on, so if you like that sort
of thing, make sure to make frequent visits to
check it out. I'll blog again big later on. -chrisp-rxsheepxr- 6月20日 'Chronicles of Chris: The Gas Huffers'What follows is yet another story from my past. I wrote this one around the same time I wrote out the Cactus Story, which was about 3 years ago or so. I may not add many updates to this one like the last few; and for those who don't know if you see text typed out (like this) that means it's something I'm adding today to make it up-to-date or to clarify something that might confuse someone.
Anyhow, here's a sad sad tale of some idiots I knew back in high school. Some people might be surprised at what they read about some of these guys, others won't be. In modern times, the way drugs are so prevalent it seems like nothing is really 'bad' anymore, but at the time that all this happened, I found it equally horrifying and funny.
Enjoy.
It's no surprise to anyone that knows me that I am not, or ever have been, a fan of either drugs. My experience with drugs and alcohol is very very limited. In fact, apart from getting a buzz from a couple drinks, I've never really been wasted. (And that's still true today.) It's never been appealing to me the way it has been for others. I think the main reason for that is because I'm afraid of it. I'm afraid of losing control. I've discovered and notice frequently that there are a lot of people in this world that have absolutely no problem losing control, and do so on a daily basis. This I cannot understand, not in the least. Having a few drinks, fine by me. Take the edge off with a joint; again, not my concern what you do. I was judged by certain people for not liking drugs and alcohol, so I figure I can judge them for using them in excess. I just make sure to judge quietly, usually as an outside observer. Truth is, as I'm sure most everyone understands, that if you hang around a group of people who are drinking or doing drugs and you're not participating, then you become the odd man out. Not that it's a bad thing, because hell, if being able to focus makes me odd, I'm there. But again, I don't dislike people because they do drugs or drink too much, I just dislike the person that comes out.
My first real witness to drug use was about ten years ago. (Closer to 13 years ago now... damn, that's a long time.) I was fourteen. Of course nowadays fourteen year olds are shooting up, smoking up, popping pills, sniffing God knows what, getting pregnant...but when I was fourteen, although only ten years ago, it was so much more innocent. One of my bus-stop buddies, Shawn, found out about the whole crisis with gas sniffing Native-Canadians from Labrador. Of course, the brain cells of this particular friend were never quite firing in succession. He seemed to skip a lot of beats, but was at the same time, a very convincing person. He talked a few of the other bus-stop buddies into getting some gas, finding a nice spot in the woods, and huff it to the point of numbness...or whatever the high was. From what I understand, a gas high is terribly addictive and terrificly stupifying, but didn't last real long; and this was not lost on my 'friends'. They found out soon enough that it was as fun as they wanted it to be, but that abuse of it led to nothing but idiocy.
Greg Strong lived on my street. We made fun of the name because this guy was a big friggin' gronk. A human ogre if there ever was one. He wasn't so much ugly, but just big. Like a big caveman or something. It was like someone took Moose Mason from the Archie comics, dyed his hair black and gave him a gut. He smoked a lot and was pretty smart...well, I guess he wasn't so much like Moose Mason after all. I'd been friends with Greg for a while. We were friends for a few years, well, up until he thought I wanted to steal his girlfriend Denise. I didn't. I never found her attractive, and it's not my fault she wanted to hold my hand during that movie, Greg. I didn't want to do it. GET OVER IT YOU BASTA.... ahem. Anyhow, she wasn't my style. I hear they're still together, after all these years. Good for them.
Anyway, at one point he lived up the street from me. He became one of the bus-stop smokers when he moved onto my street and was quickly embraced into the group once it was learned he loved Dungeons and Dragons and had many books for it. (Back then Dungeons and Dragons never really carried the stigma it does today, no one cared if you liked it or not. I thought it was okay, but I'll never play it again, that's for sure.)
One night, Greg, Shawn, Darren, Todd, Steve, some tit names Collins and I were playing the old D n' D in Greg's room. I'd become the official DJ for the games. While we played, I picked out music from soundtracks to go along with the game. I used so many cd's... "Lost Highway", "Braveheart", "Last of the Mohicans," anything that had a kind of old time, medieval feel to it. After one particularly long and intense game with Greg acting as Dungeon Master, Shawn suggested we go into the woods behind Greg's house. I thought nothing of it, really. I assumed they wanted some air, maybe talk about the battles we'd had in the game. When we got outside I saw the gas can. Someone had brought it with them at some point and I was caught unaware. A couple of the guys took turns, I won't say who, because I'd hate to think that one day one of those guys might read this and sue me or something. Just take my word for it that I didn't partake in the festivities, I just watched, shook my head and laughed.
They huffed their gas for about twenty minutes or so, giving each other brainers, leaning to get a huff with cigarettes in their mouths. I stood waaaay back. One particular individual got a little violent with me when he got wasted and couldn't find his jacket. He thought I had it and told me that if I got any tree sap on it, he'd kick my ass. Meanwhile he stunk like gas and couldn't even open his eyes. He was wearing his jacket the whole time. One of the guys, let's call him G.Strong. No, that's too obvious, let's call him Greg S. Greg S was interested in Nazi culture. He didn't want to be a nazi or skinhead or follow the doctrine of Neo Nazism or anything, but he was interested in it... the same way one might be interested in UFO's or the occult. Purely for research ind information, not for practice. He swore to us, swore that he saw Hitler that night when he was loopy off the fumes. He even started to cry when 'Hitler' ran away. Another guy passed out and looked up at Todd after a few seconds and said...in the best wasted voice mixed with Newfanese possible... "Chodd (wasted talk for 'Todd')...Chodd....I taught I wuz a model." We had no idea what that meant, but he could see in his gas induced haze that his hands were about ten sizes too big. Another guy huffed and huffed, pulled back and fell on his ass, shouting the word 'Gazelles! GAZELLES!!!" over and over again. He'd seen a logo on someone's sneaker and thought the gazelles were gonna jump off the sneaker and eat him. I tell you, it was utterly stimulating. But unfortunatly, well, probably fortunately, all things must end, and it took a baaad trip to do it.
One of the guys, lets call him "Twig." I'm calling him Twig because apparently he went out with this girl and she ended up dumping him because he wasn't..well, let's just say he wasn't packing much heat. So he was teased constantly about it. Of course, only the guys who were there know who I'm talking about, and I'm sure they all remember what happened with Twigs that night with the gas. They were all taking their hoots of the rancid stuff when suddenly Twiggy shot up like a freakin' wild animal. Tears were streaming down his face. I knew at that second he was losing it. Through tears he tried to explain what he'd seen. He was sitting next to the gas can and had looked up at us. Apparently he saw two balls of white light, round balls about the size of soccer balls, fly around from behind us as we were standing in a line. The balls had apparently swung around to the sides of us and hit us in the side. I was on the far right and Greg had been on the left, so me and him were the ones who got hit by the white light. I felt nothing out of the ordinary. No pain in the kidneys or anything like that. As far as I know, Greg felt or saw nothing either. Anyhoo, Twig said that Greg and I started to melt and the balls came out our other sides and into the next people in the line. When they were finished there they moved onto him. He said that just as the sight of the white light filled his eyes he snapped to and told us the story. He bawled like a kid. I knew at that instant that their gas hootin' days were over. Twigs grabbed the gas can and shouted into the night, "No one's touchin' this shit ever again...." He launched it, spilling gas over himself as the can bounced through the trees and out of sight. We all walked out of there quietly. Everyone understood that getting rid of the gas was a good idea, because it just wasn't worth it. Never again. I was fortunate to never get a taste of the high, which is good because I'd never have the urge to go search for something to replace it. As far as I know, every one of those guys excluding perhaps one of them, is a full fledged pothead and burned out to the point where they wouldn't even remember being my friend back in the mid nineties.
This is one of the many reasons I don't do drugs.

It hold a lot of memories, some good, some bad, and although it was written and some things have changed, it's still a part of my past. Again, like with the other posts I've made like this, I'll add new text in yellow to update you on things that may have changed since I originally wrote the 'article.' (So if you see something in yellow like this, it means Update.) Hope you enjoy. Feel free to leave comments.
I've been a fan of music for a very long time. My tastes have always varied, which a lot of people can vouch for. I never really considered myself a singer or anything like that, but there came a time in the tenth grade or so that a couple of friends of mine decided to start a band. It was Tim Chalker on guitar, Matt Boudreau on bass and Robert Burt on drums. These guys, at the time, were all good friends. They didn't have a competent singer, so after expressing some interest, they asked me to try it out. They knew I'd been in the choir (shut up) so I tried out for them, and it was pretty good; but all the guys ever wanted to play were cover songs. I think we sort of jinxed ourself by naming the band before we'd even learned a song. We called ourselves 'Corduroy.' I don't even remember who first thought of it, but I liked it because it was the name of a kick-ass Pearl Jam song, they liked it because they thought it was in reference to the jacket that Matt always wore. Eventually, after only a short time, they became bored with me. See, unlike 90% of kids my age, I didn't like Nirvana, and that's all the guys wanted to play. So without much of a ceremony or anything, I was ousted from Corduroy and replaced by some schmuck named Steve Hiscock. I'd gone through my entire schooling with this guy, through French Immersion, through High School. I'd never had a problem with him up until he replaced me. Bastard. I hear the band has been rearranged, because Tim moved to Ontario, and they are now calling themselves Standalone. (At one point I think they were calling themselves Cannon or something... I think by now the lineup has changed so much I'd hardly recognize them.) Good luck to them, though. I also hear Matt Boudreau works in Home Hardware and Robert Burt works as a waiter in Jungle Jims. But anyhow, since you don't know these people anyway, back to me...toward the end of high school I hung around with a new group of guys. One in particular, Adam Wight, who will henceforth be called Bones (the nickname I gave him, it's a gift), played bass like a maniac and really wanted to start a band. Bones and I were great friends, had been for a little while. He knew a couple of guitarists who were in the market for a band, so we went up to them and told them we were game. Bones strapped on his big black bass, Tony Cheeseman and Mike Skiffington (seriously, what kinda names are they?) got their guitars ready and I grabbed a crappy little bass drum microphone. By the end of the day we'd written two songs. I can't remember the names of them right now, but I've actually still got the original pieces of paper that I wrote the lyrics on. I'll have to dig them up some time. Not ones to learn from mistakes, we named the band a little too early...so early in fact, that we never did get a drummer before we split up. We called ourselves Vehement. It was a word that appeared in one of my songs and the guys liked it, so there you go. We split up about three weeks later. Bones and I didn't give up so easily. We went to the Peace-a-Chord, a summer music festival in St. Johns (that I believe doesn't happen anymore because too many people were using it as an excuse to get blatantly and publicly wasted... way to ruin it for everyone else, idiots) and we met a young guy named Chris Dinn. We talked with him, and of course, he was also looking for some guys to form a band. He had a drummer lined up, all he needed were a bass player and singer. Fantastic, we found another band. We met the drummer, a younger guy named Dave Gillard. He could play alright, but he wasn't amazing or anything. We called him Gizz. We all got together and played our hearts out. We wrote a ton of songs, the lyrics flowed from me like water. I'd hear a riff or beat and the words would just come. (That's how it's always been, actually... writing lyrics was NEVER a problem. The guys would be banging out a song and they'd finally get it together and I'd already have it written. They were stunned by it. It always came so easy to me I never thought anything of it, and could never understand why people had such a hard time writing things like that... but anyhow...) Over our illustrious year of being a band we wrote gems like "Sinner" (A version of which you can read HERE), "Ringlets and Heels", "Limit", "Locked and Shattered" (my personal fave) and "God5." In the end we had about twenty songs or so, not including a few cover songs that we just used to warm up with. We recorded every practice, but unfortunately, I don't have any of the recordings. (As far as I know there are only 2 people out there with recordings of any kind from the Stitch days, that's Bones and Heather Corkum... if either of you read this and you've still got copies, please contact me, I'd love to hear that crap again...) The band was eventually christened Stitch. It just popped into our heads one day around the lunch table. I'd come up with a list of about a hundred names or so that day. It's funny, you know, I came up with the name '3 Doors Down' and 'Finger Eleven' before anyone had even heard of them. I've still got the list to prove it. Eventually, we decided that Dave really sucked at drumming, so he got replaced by Bones' friend Rob Rose. Rob had a band of his own already called 'Dollhouse.' But he played guitar for them and he wanted to try his hand out at drumming, since he'd only started to really enjoy ramming the skins. So he was 'hired.' With Rob in tow, we'd named the band long before and actually played a few shows. We even knew the name of our first cd, it would be 'handoverfist.' I'd drawn logos for the band, cd covers, everything, and we were so unprepared. Christ, we even thought about getting shirts made long before our first show. But eventually we played house parties and just jammed as much as we could. I remember the time the guys got me to scream the first time. I had a tendancy to try and sing...god forbid someone sang every now and then. But at the time Korn were just hitting big, as were the deftones and other screamy, nu-metal bands. So in order to be cool, I had to scream. I remember being put in a closet...nay, locked in a closet and told I wasn't coming out until I screamed. I had a mic in there, the guys played some of our songs, and I screamed my ass off. I coughed up blood that day. After that day we were heavy, as loud as our amps would allow, and, in our minds, unstoppable. We played more shows for friends and developed a small following. It was great. Eventually Rob wanted to up the sound of the band, make it more thick. We decided we needed a second guitarist. Rob was an amazing guitarist, but we still needed a drummer, so the hunt began. My cousin Trevor introduced us to a friend of his named Brad Wells. Wells had/has cerebral palsy. He was a smart guy, but he had a couple of things wrong, like weird knees, slightly twisted hands, and the look of someone who's been dipping in the ether. We showed him a tape of our stuff and he fell in love with it. The whole time he was air-drumming along with it, I guess just getting a feel for it. But that wasn't much of an audition, so we sat him down in front of the drums while someone played a couple of tunes, I think it was Chris Dinn. Brad Wells nailed the drums outright. He amazed me. They played one song called 'headup' by deftones, and Brad did it without flaw. Handicapped my ass, this guy could drum! He was hired on the spot. The highlight of Stitch's musical journey was the Sun Splash in Paradise. We played alongside Rob's other band Dollhouse. Unfortunately, they went on first and got unplugged because they sucked so bad. Rob, ever the professional, decided to not play with us when we hit the stage. Chris Dinn had to improvise because he now had to cover all his guitar parts as well as Rob's. But he pulled it off, I'll always respect that of him. We had a mosh pit going, all our parents were there. All in all it was a fun time. Someone videotaped the event, and it was fun to watch, but again, I don't have any copies. Things went downhill from there. Rob got more interested in making Dollhouse a better band, a feat which he eventually accomplished by getting Brad Wells to leave Stitch and join him. In one day we lost our drummer and guitarist. Stitch was pretty much over. We were all still friends, but of course, there was bitterness. Chris Dinn and I had written a lot of acoustic stuff, and I actually have a couple of copies of some of that. But it wasn't the same. Stitch was gone from us. I miss it, I really do. I wish we'd all stayed together, but in the end, I think it was for the better.
Well, Dollhouse were still a band. Rob Rose was no longer a part of them though, although Wells still drums for them. Rob decided he'd rather produce music than perform, so he's following that dream. Dollhouse won an East Coast Music Battle of the Bands about a year ago. I used to see Brad every now and then, but I've lost touch with him completely. (Apparently Brad's playing drums in a band called 'Marceno' now.... click HERE to check out their myspace.) Bones went back to his Hardcore Punk roots in a band called 'This Day Forth.' He was playing bass, and they had a bit more success than Stitch did, they even went on a tour of Halifax, for whatever reason. Last I heard, they broke up and Bones has been jumping form band to band, trying to find his place. (Last I saw, he was working at Urban Sound Exchange in St. Johns, which is plenty appropriate, and he's got a full sleeve of tattoos and piercings, which surprised the hell out of me when I saw...) Chris Dinn turned into a dick for a long while. Bottom line. His sister died of cancer a couple years ago while I was in College, but I haven't talked to him since before then. Apparently he's a militant vegan, some kind of activist and everything. He had a band called Sweatshop for the longest time, with him singing. Again, last I heard he was dating some chick at Memorial University in Newfoundland. (I have seen Chris since then, I bumped into him crossing Yonge Street here in Toronto, of all places. One in a million shot. We never talked, but I contacted him via email and we chatted a bit. Nothing came of it though. I'm sure it's no loss to either of us.) As for Mike Skiffington and Tony Cheeseman, the guys I started me music career with, the boys from Vehement; I hear they have a band now called Lifted. I heard a song by them, it was decent...it was no Vehement though. (I don't think Lifed is a band anymore though, I couldn't find their website. All those guys switch bands faster than anything anyhow.) I miss being in a band, I really do. I got a keyboard one year and wrote songs on it constantly. Only a few people heard these songs. Tapes of them got handed out to a few people, but for the most part I only did it for me. Just so I could keep busy ehough to not go crazy. Unfortunately, I'm not musically active right now. (Of course, that's no longer true, I've since written over 30 tunes on the computer, many of which are available on this website, right over there under 'VanChimera.' It's my site, I'll pimp out my stuff if I want!) I have every intention of getting an acoustic guitar and writing some songs, just like me and Dinn. Just like me and my cousin Jordan used to do before he joined the military. Hell, maybe someday I'll be back into the swing of it. I wish Travis would learn how to play guitar, then I wouldn't have to. We'd be called Scratchback, and we'd kick ass. Just like Stitch. Oh, there I go again, naming the band before it even exists. The curse continues...
Thanks for reading. Feel free to comment and to check out my VanChimera mp3's.
Seeya, guys.
Til Next time.
